When hearing loss is identified and children receive appropriate amplification and intervention by the age of six months, research shows that children are likely to demonstrate language scores commensurate with their hearing peers by the age of five. For more than thirty years the Sound Start Program has been teaching babies who are deaf and hard of hearing (birth to three years of age) to listen, speak, and communicate. Professionals with The Sound Start Program also teach and support parents through home based services and classes held at Lake Drive School in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey. Our newest program is the Sound Start Nursery, an inclusive program, which serves toddlers from age 18 to 36 months. This early language enriched academic program provides guided opportunities for toddlers who are deaf and hard of hearing to learn and interact with typically developing peers from the community.

Funding for early intervention services in N.J. is not adequate to provide the intensity and diversity of services to prepare children with hearing loss to enter school ready to learn. In order to support these services, the Sound Start Babies Foundation, formally the Lake Drive Foundation was established by a group of community volunteers. The sole purpose of this foundation is to raise money for The Sound Start Babies Program. It is through the dedication of individuals from this Foundation that money has been raised to provide direct services to babies and toddlers from many counties in New Jersey.
